The classic science fiction anti-hero, Northwest Smith, takes center stage in this stunning scene for the Gnome Press printing of Northwest of Earth (1954), a collection by pioneering female science fiction & fantasy writer C. L. Moore that includes several stories set on Mars. Smith, a spaceship pilot and smuggler who lives in an undisclosed future time when humanity has colonized the solar system, has been cited as a possible inspiration for Han Solo of Star Wars.
