Auction Records: Original 1940's Hannes Bok fantasy painting The Sentry (A Being Guarding the Entrance to a Martian Canyon)

Hannes Bok (American SF&F artist, 1914-1964)

The Sentry (A Being Guarding the Entrance to a Martian Canyon), 1944
Oil on board, 24 x 18 inches. Signed lower right.

This painting by Hannes Bok, the first artist to win the prestigious Hugo Award, was used to illustrate “Come and Kill Me, Earthman!”, a poem penned by Richard E. Geis that was published on the back cover of the fanzine Destiny No. 10 (Summer 1954) just prior to the 12th World Science Fiction Convention, held at San Francisco in September 1954.

Sold for: $4,033 (includes BP)
Date sold: October 26, 2009

According to the fanzine eI 6 (Vol. 2, No. 1, January 2003) by Earl Kemp, the title in the poem pictured above contains a typographical error. The correct title of the poem is "Come and Kill Me, Earthmen!" not "Come and Kill Me, Earthman!"
