1968 Soviet book teaches school children about Martian SF
Check out this beautifully illustrated book of late 1960’s Communist propaganda: Отзовитесь, марсиане! [Respond, the Martians!] (1968), by Pavel Klushantsev, a well-known Russian film director, producer, screenwriter and author. In addition to discussing the science of Mars, the book also compares two classic science fiction novels: the capitalist The War of the Worlds (1898) by British author H.G. Wells, and the communist Aelita (1923) by Russian author Alexei Tolstoy. Pictured here is my favorite illo from Отзовитесь, марсиане!, a water pumping station on Mars.
