New nuclear Mars novella: "Orion Rising" by Jason Stoddard

Panverse Publishing, “a small press dedicated to publishing story-rich work by new writers and established professionals,” recently published Panverse Three (September 2011), a SF&F anthology that includes a new original novella by author Jason Stoddard entitled “Orion Rising.” While I haven’t read Stoddard's work, it seems to be a grim alternate nuclear-fueled space race history in which Mars is colonized by the Americans and the Soviets in the 1970’s. The result: Radiation. Fallout. Insanity.

Critic Lois Tilton of Locus Online has written a harsh review of “Orion Rising,” noting that it is “An oddly pastwards-looking work, informed so strongly by the Cold War mentality that readers might think it was discovered in some dust-covered truck of that era.”

An excerpt from “Orion Rising” is posted on Panverse Publishing's website.
