"The Impulse to Punish" ~ 2010 Mars novelette by Ty Johnston

Working class fans of Martian science fiction & fantasy who are tired of overpaying for overpriced e-books published by the major houses down in New York City will appreciate this free read: “The Impulse to Punish” (2010), a SF novelette by writer and family man Ty Johnston that was published last year on the website of Abandoned Towers Magazine. Set on the Red Planet in the mid 22nd century, here’s the description:

Imagine a Mars that has been transformed into a world much like rural America is today. Small towns. Farms. Churches.

Into this futuristic backdrop comes Dr. John Simon from Earth, ready to take on the job of doctor for the Milton Colony. Only the doctor soon discovers that those who break the law in Milton Colony are branded for their punishment. Literally branded.

He cannot live with that. Things must change in Milton Colony. To do so means not only changing the mindsets and the local government, but it also means revealing all the colonists' nasty little secrets.

While I haven't  read "The Impulse to Punish", according to author Ty Johnston, “If you like slightly futuristic stories that are sort of reminiscent of 1950s and '60s soft sci-fi and not too hard on the technology aspects, this should be just right for you.”

  1. Thanks for the shout-out about my story. And, I'd like to add, this is a very interesting blog you've got here. I'll be spending some time looking around, for sure.
